Lost Wharf | Environment Concept

A 5-day project specifically made for my portfolio.
|
The aim was to create a dystopian, depressing and industrial dock/wharf/harbor town. I set out looking for an atmospheric and desolate result. What I ended up with was an industrial wharf build on the shores of a cave lake system. The people living and working here are an oppressed part of society and forced to work underground. Their lives are miserable, as the pollution from the underground factories creates toxic smog that causes acidic rain and mist, constantly eating away at the metal building and people, meaning that they have to protected at all times.

I also laid out the goals in terms of style, mood and purpose of the project

Thumbnail Sketches in Black&White
I tried to layout some of the rough directions in which I could spin the topic

Color Concept 1
Using a reference image I tried out different hues and contrasting colors by sketching thumbnails that the color mood invoked
I ended up rejecting this color scheme, even though it contrasted quite nicely

Color Concept 2
Same process, but with a heavily tinted ambiance that immediately invoked a more smoggy, toxic and polluted environment

Color Concept 3
Tried to make the mood more desolate and dystopian, with gray/brownish colors
I did not use this as I felt that it removed the nautical ambiance completely

Color Concept 4
This is what I decided on in the end, even though it was still subject to iteration

Environment Moccup
Using the sketches I thought were most fitting I made a rough moccup by bashing together some of my previously painted thumbnails and painting over

Character Concepts
While not the focus I did want to explore people working at the docks

Moccup 2
I corrected the initial moccup using a quick 3D model of the scene to improve perspective and scale
I did not paint over the 3D model however, as it was too rough, which is why the perspective still has a lot of issues
